what is email marketing?

Updated: Aug 1, 2020

Email marketing has been around for a long time. It is one of the most direct and effective ways of connecting with your leads and nurturing them into customers.

Email marketing is a highly effective digital marketing strategy of sending emails (a.k.a. newsletters) to prospective and existing customers. Effective marketing emails convert prospects into customers, and turn buyers into loyal fans.

Why email marketing matters

Here are top 3 reasons why you should engage in email marketing.

1. Almost everyone has, and checks their emails regularly.

With 99% of email users checking their inbox daily, email marketing can be one of the most effective methods of communicating with your customers.

2. Your subscriber list is an asset.

To launch an email marketing campaign, you will first need to build up a pool of subscribers. Like any other assets that your business owns (e.g. inventory, plants, equipment), your subscriber list is valuable and can have great monetary value.

3. Email marketing can convert leads to sales.

An effective newsletter can drive your subscribers into buying your products or services quickly. Some statistics even claim that email marketing has a return on investment of up to 4400%!

How to do email marketing

There are 3 general steps to start an email marketing campaign.

1. Gather a list of subscribers

Firstly, you need to have people to send emails to. To grow your email list, you need to attract people with a compelling offer. Most people do not offer their emails without receiving something in return. For this, you will need a lead magnet.

A lead magnet is something that you give away for free in exchange for an email address. It doesn’t have to cost you anything to create. Most lead magnets are digital materials that you can create yourself at minimal or no cost. It can be absolutely anything you want, so long as it provides value to your visitors for free.

2. Engage an email service provider

This essentially means that you need to have an email account in order to send messages to your subscribers. In this digital age, most businesses should already have their own email platforms which can be used for email marketing. If you do not have a business email account, fret not! Creating an email account is not just easy, but free! Just head over to Gmail or Yahoo Mail and set up your own business email account for free, within minutes.

If you already have your own business website, your web host may also offer email marketing tools that you can tap on.

3. Create good email content

If your subscribers are happy with your content, they are more likely to open your emails in the future. They may even begin to eagerly anticipate your emails.

The key is to make sure that every single time you email your subscribers, you need to deliver something of real value. Value can come in many forms, such as a limited-time offer, a new product launch, or an educational newsletter. The higher the value of your email, the more loyal your subscribers will become, and your open rates will increase.

It is also a good practice to use catchy lines, humour, and good graphics to attract your subscribers to read your emails.
